MENA Energy: A cloudy winter gives way to a green spring
MENA Outlook Quarterly
This quarterly, we chose to focus on the MENA region’s energy transition for our regional theme. The contours of the global green shift have been emerging for a while, but the MENA region is excelling by rapidly increasing the deployment of, and investments in, clean energy. We focus on:
- How governments are increasing their presence in the renewable energy sector, primarily through expediting private capital and catering for the risk that private investors face in R&D, project commercialisation and expansion stages.
- The new sectors creating innovative financial products, such as the green sukuk market, which provides both public and private investors with an opportunity to accelerate the adoption of ESG standards.
- The economic outlook of the MENA region, as the course of recovery will not be even in 2021, particularly due to the unbalanced rollout of vaccine programmes across countries.
- The geopolitical situation, with 2021 marking a decade since the Arab Spring created the popular desire to change the established order in the MENA region.
